Your menu is one of the most read pieces of printed material your business produces. Every customer at every table reads it at every visit. It communicates your brand, sets expectations for price and quality, and directly influences what people order and how much they spend. Getting it right is worth the investment.
Here is what Sydney hospitality operators need to know about menu printing.
The most practical option for high-turnover venues, casual dining, cafes and takeaways. Laminated menus are wipe-clean, durable and easy to update — simply reprint and laminate when your menu changes. Available in A4, A5 and DL sizes. They communicate practicality and function rather than luxury, which is entirely appropriate for the right type of venue.
A4 bifolds (folding to A5) and A4 trifolds (folding to DL) give more space for food and drink categories without requiring a large single sheet. Bifold menus are clean and easy to navigate. Trifolds suit venues with multiple distinct sections — food, drinks, desserts, specials.
For fine dining, wine bars and venues with extensive menus, a bound multi-page menu communicates premium positioning. Saddle-stitched booklets (stapled at the spine) or spiral-bound formats are both available. The cover stock, interior paper weight and binding style all contribute to the perceived quality of the venue.
Not all menus are paper. Printed A-frame inserts for blackboard-style frames are popular in casual venues and create a warmth and informality that suits the aesthetic. These can be printed in a blackboard effect and updated without replacing the hardware.
Item placement matters enormously. Research consistently shows that items placed in the top-right quadrant of a menu are ordered most frequently. High-margin items should be placed prominently. Items you want to highlight can be boxed, bolded or given a visual treatment that draws the eye.
Limit the number of items per category. A long list of 30 options creates decision paralysis. Eight to twelve items per category, curated with confidence, communicates quality and expertise.
Invest in food photography if your menu uses images. A blurry, poorly lit food photo does more damage than no photo at all. Commission professional food photography for menu images or leave them out entirely.
For venues with seasonal or frequently changing menus, laminated inserts that can be updated and reprinted cheaply are more practical than premium bound menus. For venues with stable menus, a quarterly or annual reprint of premium menus is entirely reasonable.
